The Three Body Problem: Consider a system of three equal point masses under mutual gravitational attraction. I was thrilled to see nonlinear dynamics come up as the central topic for a science fiction novel. Because of that, it almost felt like my version of Jurassic Park. The story revolves around a group of physicists who are interested in the “three body” which is a chaotic nonlinear system. I wont spoil too much, but if you’re interested in reading the book, it might be best to do that first. In addition to the interesting perspective, engaging prose, and thrilling story, the science of this book seem almost designed for me.īefore I continue, I want to give a spoiler alert. In particular this book is set during and following the Cultural Revolution in China and reading about that from the Chinese academic perspective provided a very different perspective from the traditional American one. Firstly, it is Chinese science fiction and reading things written from the perspective of a different culture is always interesting and provides great insight. This book was recommended to me and it is one of my new favorites. It begins with the couplet “You must not think because my glance is quick / To shift from this to that, from here to there,” and concludes, “I know my drifting will not prove a loss, / For mine is a rolling stone that has gathered moss.”Ī sampling of what Avedon found as he ventured out into the world with his camera will be on view in “Avedon 100,” opening on May 4 at the West 21st Street outpost of Gagosian gallery in New York. Avedon’s winning entry in the 1941 Scholastic Art & Writing competition was a poem called “Wanderlust,” in which the narrator appears eager to leave home in search of new people, places, and experiences despite those who caution him to take a more conventional path. It’s a tiny factoid that bobs like a little buoy in the great sea of accolades that has surrounded his body of work as a photographer-one he began creating in earnest at Harper’s Bazaar in the waning days of the Second World War and continued to restlessly reshape and reimagine until his death in 2004 at the age of 81. Richard Avedon once won a teen poetry contest. Photomat, Richard Avedon, photographer, with James Baldwin, writer, New York, September 1, 1964. That’s a pretty good snapshot of the kind of place Australia is – a country so vast that covert nuclear bomb tests can go unnoticed for years! How did the world respond to this shocking news? The New York Times ran just one story, in 1997, four years after the actual event. Apparently, its aim of putting an end to the world included secret bomb tests in the desert! More disturbingly still, the group was known to have nuclear engineers among its members. When the authorities investigated, they found a sophisticated laboratory and evidence that members of the group had been mining uranium. Subsequent investigations turned up a massive 500,000-acre property owned by the group near the site of the previously unexplained seismic activity. Later, in 1995, the Japanese Aum Shinrikyo cult achieved notoriety after killing 12 commuters in a nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway. In the end, the tremors were chalked up as an unsolvable mystery. It couldn’t have been a meteorite strike as there wasn’t a crater, and the activity was too intense to be blamed on a mining accident. An earthquake was ruled out, which left a couple of possibilities. The disturbances took place in the Great Victoria Desert. Take the seismic activity that baffled experts in 1993. Even the most bizarre events there barely make international news. It’s a massive country that leaves a comparatively small footprint in the global consciousness. What do you really know about Australia? If you’re not from “down under,” probably not a lot. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Always You by Nell IrisWhen something happens to upset the status quo, Lee pulls away. What do we owe our ancestors, and what claim do they have on us? How do we shoulder the legacy of their shortcomings, sins and crimes? These questions cloud our country’s history and dog the conscience of anyone who has wandered into the weeds of and stumbled on a handwritten will revealing that their forebears owned slaves (and parceled them out to their children when they died).
